    What is a wireless access point? 

    A wireless access point (WAP) is a hardware component designed to allow Wifi or Bluetooth enabled devices to connect to a local area network. For every wireless access point added to a network, the broader the range and coverage of that Wifi network. This, in turn, enables more users to connect to the existing Wifi network, as they don’t need to be in such close proximity to the router. 


    How do wireless access points work? 

    A wireless access point is effectively a network extender. Whilst a single router may be able to handle a few users simultaneously this is only the case if they are within close proximity to it. This reduces the practicality of the router significantly, increasing reliance on high-maintenance, inconvenient caballing.  Wireless access points work similar to a router, in that they collect and distribute data from user devices to and from a network. However, they effectively extend the range and improve wireless connectivity to the network itself. 

    The more spread out your wireless access points are, the greater the network coverage within your office or home. However, it is important to consider the capacity of your router and internet devices when selecting wireless access point products. The more users on a network, the greater the number of requests and the increase in the burden on the router. A weak router will struggle to maintain performance, increasing latency on the network.
